What Can a Players Buy-In tell you

When taking a seat at a No-Limit cash game, take a look at the players’ buy-in amounts. This is not a solid tell and is only a guideline but either way can be very helpful to a serious cash game player.

When taking a seat at a No-Limit cash game online, you can buy-in for a minimum or maximum amount. Players’ who Buy-in with the minimum tend to be weekend players or a recreational player. That’s because they have a tendency to play with a personal limit.

Players who Buy-in at a No-Limit cash game with the maximum amount are often loose players who want to intimidate players and like to bluff with big bets. A big stack can be intimidating for fish and many see it as a sign of a good player but this is not always the case. Do be careful here because it’s not unusual to get a shark who wants to control the table and guarantee they can take any player at the table all in.

So what about those players who take the centre path? From my experience these are the players you mostly want to be cautious of, as they know that they don’t want to get bullied because they only have a minimum amount, but they don’t want to be in a situation where they need to risk everything because another player has tried to push all-in. This is how you should enter the table too and it’s how I will Buy-in at a No-Limit cash games. This way I have chips but not my entire daily bankroll. I want to be sophisticated but not flash, think of it like this.

When you Buy-In at a No-Limit cash game your Buy-in should be in the middle of the minimum Buy-in and the maximum Buy-in, but you may alter this rule slightly depending on the tables situation and any history you may have on any of the players.
