Introduction to Texas Holdem Poker

Texas Holdem poker can be played with ten players all the way down to two players, or more commonly known as a heads up game. The game’s popularity is due to many factors, but it success is mainly due to the games simple rules and fast paced action. Today it's easy to learn Texas Holdem poker, and free. All the leading online poker rooms offer free poker games and many offer classes and advice along with Freeroll Tournaments.

In a game of Texas holdem poker, the dealer gives each player two cards face down, also known as hole cards. This starts the first round of betting and players can call the big blind, raise or fold. Then three community cards are dealt face up in the centre of the table, this is called the Flop, followed by another round of betting. One more card is dealt to the centre of the table, called the turn, or sometimes known as 4th street. After another round of betting the dealer places the fifth and final card in the centre, this is known as the river or 5th street, and then players make their last bets.

In Texas holdem poker the players have a total of five community cards, that are dealt face up in the centre of the poker table for all to use. Players use their hole cards and the five community cards to make the best five card hand possible (see hand ranks).  The player with the highest five-card hand at the end of a round, or at showdown, wins the pot.
