In poker there are terms for everything and sometimes more than one term for the same thing, depending on the game, where the player is from and also personal preference. To make things a little clearer for you we have highlighted some of the most Basic and common poker terminology for you. Hand 1. A player’s hand is the combination of cards he holds. 2. A single hand of poker would be from one shuffle to the next. Hand Rank The ranking of hand combinations used in poker Play / A Play 1. To it in on a poker game and play 2. To get involved in a particular pot / to play your hand 3. Doing something dramatic or creative during a particular hand, as in ‘to make a play’. Pot 1. The pot is the total amount of money bet by players over the course of a hand. 2. An area at the centre of the table where players bets are accumulated during play. Split Pot This happens when two players have the same hand. In this case the pot is divided equally between the players with the same high hand. Note; When the pool is not equally divisible then the left over amount goes to the player who called the highest bet. Side Pot When there are more than one player involved in a hand and one of the players has less chips than is needed to cover a bet, then the pot is divided so that the remainder of the players involved can continue betting. Blinds A forced bet that a player must place before he/she receives cards. There are only two blinds placed at every hand, the big blind and small blind. The blinds rotate around the table. Ante A forced, bet that must be made by all players before any cards are dealt. An ante encourages action in a game by automatically creating an amount in the pot before betting has started. This usually happens in high stakes games and in tournaments after a number of levels. Hole Cards The cards held by a player. These cards are the player’s hidden cards that others cannot see. Community Cards These are the cards dealt to the centre of the table in Hold’em and Omaha games. These community cards can be used by all players at the table. Players combine their hole cards with the community cards in order to make the best five card hand they can. Flop This term is for Hold’em and Omaha and is the first three community cards that are dealt at the same time. Turn / Fourth Street In Hold’em and Omaha Poker the turn or fourth street is the fourth community card dealt, it is the card after the flop. The button is moved from one player to the next in a clockwise rotation. When a player has the dealer button he is ‘In Position’ or ‘on the button’. This player is always the last to act on every round of betting and therefore has some advantage as he/she can decide on the best Corse of action after everyone has made their move.
